Title: New to Fells and New to Group

MrsMedic - June 19, 2007 12:42 PM (GMT)
Greetings to all.

I was just given two Fell stallions, one is in his late teens the other is around 8 yrs old. From what I was told their original owners were elderly and have passed on, with them went the knowledge of whereabouts of the registration papers.

Their current owner has no time for them and has no clue to their registered names. I think she is a relative of the original owner.

Anyhow, I will be getting these lovely boys soon. I understand they have not had much handling.

My first thought is to geld them both and turn them into cart ponies.

I have no idea how to track down their papers.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Linda

 and :welcome: to fell pony fans Linda :)

A very interesting introduction and very thought provoking

Just an idea on the possibilities of tracing the bloodlines......

IF, the boys were initially put up for stallion licencing with the orginal owner, the boys will have been required to be DNA typed. If this is the case, it is possible the FPS will have them on record, in which case you could get hold of a duplicate passport for both of them :)

If you would like some help in this direction, please don't hesitate to contact me via PM and I'll see if I can pursue a line of query.

Once you have settled into the group and have learnt how to post photographs  I would love to see them both.

Before you decide upon gelding them, wait until they arrive home with you, and then assess them in temperament. Also, it potentially gives you a bit of time to pursue a line of enquiry with DNA typing first, if the boys are rare in bloodline, the potentially could be sought after for breeding prospects??

:welcome2: and Congratulations for getting 2 Fells. I reckon some on here would say to leave your boys entire :dunno:

:welcome2: to Fell Pony Fans, Linda. I don't know much about DNA typing but :crossfingers: you will be able to find out who your boys are. Look forward to hearing more about them when they arrive. :)

Linda, this may give you a bit of a head start in tracking the boys registrations down.

If you contact Elizabeth Parkin [Fell Pony Secretary] at this address
fellponysocietysecretary@hotmail.co.uk explain your current situation with regards to the boys. If she is able to trace possibilities, she may direct you into DNA testing, there are a number of places in the US that are able to DNA for you, I will dig out the address's for you. Once those tests are through, you fax the originals but keep a copy for your records and send them to the Fell Pony Society, you could in theory ask for the ponies to have duplicate passports.

I cannot guarantee any of the above will help in obtaining duplicates, but it has got to be worth a shot :)

1) make sure you know the exact/approximate ages [it will help Elizabeth when looking through computer records]

2) where the boys have come from [current home]

3) colour and [markings if any]

4) have you had the boys ID scanned....could be worth checking to see if they have Identichips.

The late teens one, could be one of Mary Jean Goulds ponies or Wendy Ihlang if he was a bred in USA, he could be an UK import too, but if you can contact these ladies listed below, they would be able to give you a list of foals bred on or around about the time you think your chappy was born!!??

Mary Jeans website is: http://www.laurelhighland.com/

Wendy Ihlangs website is: http://www.fellponies.com/

Ok talked to the lady who has them now, they are 3/4 Fell. She said the Grandfathers name started with a "T". I am going to see them this afternoon and will take pictures.

They are crossed with saddlebreds. so very bummed they are not full fell.

In which case Linda, they could be Dan Shanahan from Majestic Stables. He put a breeding programme together to create a very high stepping pony/horse for traps and the competition horse??
