I bought my lovely Fell pony mare, Ravenscairn Sonya, better known as Velvet, on December 9th and brought her all the way home on December 14th, a 7 hour trip with the trailer.
She has settled in very quickly and is best friends with my 19 year old broodmare (TBx ID).
I have taken her out on several rides and she is keen and very interested in where she is going without being silly. Velvet is absolutely bombproof in traffic which she showed to me on our first ride, when a tractor towing a sheeptrailer met us without slowing down on a narrow country lane. If she had moved an inch, she would have been hit. As far as Velvet was concerned, the tractor wasn't there!
She has gone through a meeting with the blacksmith for new shoes, a saddle fitting trip with the trailer and being introduced to other horses on hacks with friends. She hasn't put a foot wrong.
As I run a horse B&B and need to do lot of route checking and exploring in the mountains and hills around us, she will be very useful.

The reason I bought Velvet was that my very first customers in 2005 were 2 ladies from Cumbria, one on a Fell and one on a Dale. They have become good friends and I had a ride on Lucy, the Fell pony. Over the years I have had 17 different breeds of horse/pony coming to stay, quite a few Fells. When the owner heard I was looking for a riding pony, she offered to look out for me in Cumbria and found me Velvet. She has 3 Fells Lucy, Magic and her 32 year old one. I have a senior moment and cannot remember her name.
It is amazing how many friends you make running a horse B&B :)

Hello :welcome2: to
Fell Pony Fans good to see velvet has a good home !
I think the lady you are thinking of is called Cecilia :)

luciennebennett - Velvet is gorgeous!! How long have you had her? Glad to see you converted, lol. My mate is trying to get me to buy a TB/ID X but I don't think I will - I love my ponies!
luciennebennett - January 19, 2008 08:22 PM (GMT)
Yes her name is Celia and she is a remarkable lady! Her cup is always half full in spite of bad arthritis. She came with me to buy Velvet.
I have always had TB crosses. My first one, Tempest, was a 1/4 Suffolk Punch 3/4 TB, jet black without any white markings and Velvet is just a smaller version. I bought Tempest as a just backed 4 year old and she was put down last year at the age of 32! The reason I got her was that we thought we were not going to have any children as we had tried for 4 years without success. Four months after I bought Tempest I was pregnant! So Tempest was put in foal to keep me company and she had a lovely filly foal. I broke Tempest to drive, she has done 3, 100 mile long distance rides, I evented her, hunted and hacked. She was a lovely ride, forward going but never naughty, a horse in a life time. My others have been ID/TB. I have now reached a more mature age and don't want to go eventing anymore.
It looks as if Velvet will be a very similar type in temperament and outlook on life. Let us hope she will get as old. She can see me out if she hangs on.....
